The Board of Aldermen meeting on Jan. 23 had a special ceremony to honor Kristi Thomson for her honorable actions on Nov. 22, 2023. As the BH-FP reported Kristi (Roe) Thomson saw her neighbor’s house on fire at 1:55 a.m. The house on the 110 block of North Elgin Avenue, housed 15-year-old Anakin Rhodes who was home alone at the time. Thomson was able to awaken Rhodes, therefore saving his life. more
The Citizens Memorial Hospital (CMH) Senior Health Center is celebrating its 20th anniversary with an open house from 9-11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 26. The Center is at 1840 W. Broadway St. in Bolivar. more
The Polk County Extension Center will be holding a Private Pesticide Applicator Training on Tuesday, Feb. 6, at the Polk County Fairgrounds, 4560 S.100 Road, Bolivar. The class will start at 6 p.m. and conclude around 9 p.m. There is no cost for the training. Terry Halleran, Regional Agronomy Specialist, will facilitate the training. more

Vickers embodies the spirit of El Dorado Springs. Born and raised on the family farm near El Dorado Springs, Vickers graduated from El Dorado Springs High School in 1980. He briefly ventured to Springfield to pursue studies at Missouri State University. His healthcare journey started soon after as the supervisor for maintenance, housekeeping, and laundry at Community Springs Healthcare Facility from 1984 to 1985. more

William Pool is turning 99 years old on Jan. 13, a milestone most of us will never obtain. It is an achievement he has earned. I met with Pool in November, intending to make him a focus of our Veterans Day paper, but he had a story that needed something more; reaching 99 was a point to celebrate, his service in the military was short but impactful, and his family background is fascinating, so the paper decided to wait and tell his entire story, not just the WWII epic. What better time to share his tale than for his birthday? more

I have always been a bit of a tomboy with a girly flair, at least that is how I best describe it. When I was little I could play with my set of Matchbox cars in the morning, have a Barbie party with some friends in the afternoon, then play dress up and pretend we are the girlfriends of the en vogue boy band by night. I loved to go to Grandma’s farm and frolic through the land, having imaginary scenarios of dancing with a prince just to have that same prince be bested by my tree-climbing prowess. more
