Berean Baptist Church, 4450 Scenic Ave., Bolivar, is hosting a free community-wide Trunk-Or-Treat event coming up on Sunday, Oct. 29, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Trunk-Or-Treat will feature lots of family friendly games, inflatables (bounce houses and inflatable jousting), snacks, hot apple cider and hot chocolate, and of course, plenty of candy. “The purpose of calling [the BH-FP] is not to get donations, but to get the word out,” was the adamant statement from Keeling Foundation Director, Jannis Keeling-Counts. I did a little research about the foundation when it was brought to my attention that they wanted to discuss their institution with the paper, but sitting down and talking about the goals and successes of the organization left me feeling like there are still genuinely good and altruistic people in this world. more

The creative, commercial, and overall cultural impact of 1973’s “The Exorcist” cannot be overstated. Every Halloween, you’re bound to see and hear references to the film, from facsimiles of Linda Blair’s otherworldly-affected face to recreations of the iconic head-spinning scene to quotes of demonic threats that can’t be repeated here. The film spawned both sequels and prequels, none of which I’ve seen, but critical consensus indicates paled in comparison to the original. more

The Sew ‘N’ Sew Quilt Guild will meet Friday, Oct. 20, at 9:30 a.m. at the Butterfield Nursing Home to give a trunk show of two quilts from each member. There will be a drawing for one lucky resident for a quilt donated by the guild. We will return to the Methodist Church to continue showing our quilts and telling why they are our favorites.
