The Clara Building was built in 1884 to house the R.B. Viles Dry Goods store and was named in honor of his young daughter Clara. Over the years, until just recently, the store had been continually used as a clothing and dry goods store. Delarue’s Department Store (where my mother took me shopping before school started each year); Alyce’s Closet (which many of us remember fondly; and the Village Boutique has all occupied this building.
