The Matilda Polk Campbell chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, will hold its monthly meeting at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 21, at Open Hearts United Methodist Church in Bolivar.
Programs this year focus on women, women’s history and women’s issues. This month, Dr. Alice Bristow will present a program on Martha Berry and the Extraordinary Women of Berry College.
Berry College, one of the DAR-supported schools, began in 1902 near Rome, Georgia, when Martha Berry opened her boy’s school to provide an education to boys in exchange for their work to help run and maintain the school.
The purse project is an ongoing project this chapter year. Hygiene and personal care items are being collected to be packed in purses and given to women entering domestic violence shelters. Since the beginning of this chapter year, about 35 purses have been packed and given to House of Hope for women.
“Project Patriot” supports our deployed service personnel. Snack items and personal care items are being collected to be sent to the son of one of Matilda’s daughters, who is serving on a ship in northern Europe.
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is a patriotic service organization for women who can trace their lineage to a Revolutionary Patriot, who is someone who provided material benefit to the Revolutionary cause. Daughters are passionate about community service, preserving history, educating children, as well as honoring and supporting those who serve our nation.
All meetings are free and open to the public.
