Henry VIII created the role of GS in the 16th century. Stool was the name of the vessel used by the king to um, do his business - we call it a toilet. The GS’s job was to provide water for the stool, towels for cleaning, fresh water for washing, monitoring the ‘product’, and reporting peculiarities to doctors. Some say the GS may have also wiped ye royal bottom, but that is debated. It was a highly sought-after job due to its proximity to the king. George III had nine GSs - one became the Prime Minister of Britain.
