Health center shares info on new COVID deaths

Posted

As the COVID-19 pandemic wears on, the Polk County Health Center has shared information on six new coronavirus-related deaths in the county.

The county’s death toll for the entire course of the pandemic reached 66 by press time Friday, Feb. 11.

Three of the county’s residents who died were between the ages of 52 and 66, community educator Carol Bookhout said. One person was over 80 years old.

Bookhout said the center did not have information on the ages of two residents who died as of press time. However, she said they were residents of long-term care facilities.

One person had received two vaccinations but no booster dose, Bookhout said. Two others were unvaccinated, she said.

As of press time Friday, the center did not know the vaccination status of three people who had died, Bookhout said.

Bookhout said the health center is no longer sharing information regarding COVID-19 deaths on social media.

Despite the recent COVID-19 deaths, the center said the county is now seeing “downward trend in new cases and in need for testing,” per a Wednesday, Feb. 9, social media post.

Thank you for your support, Polk County,” the post stated. “We appreciate everyone who stands with us in the fight against COVID-19. Your efforts are making a difference!”

In a post earlier this month, the center said community members can take “a few simple steps” to make the “chain of health stronger.”

The center said community members should get vaccinated and/or boosted, stay home if they don't feel well, avoid large crowds if possible and wear a mask when in public, even if they are vaccinated.

The health center has free surgical masks available at its drive-thru window, and staff offer vaccinations from 8-11:45 a.m. and 1-4:45 p.m. Monday through Friday.
