Howling for homecoming

Posted

Southwest Baptist University celebrated the last day of homecoming week with a parade and a Great Lakes Valley Conference opener. SBU went up against the University of Indianapolis, but the Bearcats were overtaken 77-10 on Saturday, Oct. 2.

In the first 11 seconds of the game, UINDY took ownership of the scoreboard right from the opening kickoff, when a Greyhound caught the ball and raced 96 yards for a touchdown.

After SBU turned over the ball to UINDY, Greyhound Bryce Stancombe passed the ball to an open man down the field, who caught the ball and raced in for another touchdown.

Within just two plays, the teams entered into the weather delay with the Greyhounds up 14-0.

The teams charged back onto the field about an hour later, and with four minutes left in the first quarter, the Greyhounds rested at a 35-0 lead.

With the ball back in the Bearcats’ hands, Cooper Callis made a 41-yard pass to Jordan Kent. Then, with 1:47 left on the clock and SBU starting its play with a fourth down, Logan Turner kicked a 51-yard field goal, ticking the scoreboard up to 35-3.

By the end of the second quarter, UINDY had a 56-3 lead.

During halftime, SBU began its homecoming coronation.

As several students walked down the middle of the field, the announcer told the crowd about each of them, including their backgrounds and future plans.

After the homecoming court lined up at the edge of the field, the chosen king and queen were announced. Last year’s royals did the honors of crowning SBU’s 2021 homecoming king Coleman Yantis and queen Abigail Farris.

Also announced during halftime were the homecoming week dorm competition results.

After a week of challenges like mud-tug and bed races, brother and sister-dorms paired up to win either first, second or third place.

In first place was Beasley-Memorial, in second place was Leslie-Landen and in third place was Woody-Gott.

When the football game picked back up, SBU was the first to score. Callis turned the ball over to teammate Preston Carson, who ran 53 yards into the end zone.

After a successful PAT, the score rose to 56-10.

However, by the end of the fourth quarter, UINDY’s players had taken a 77-10 lead, which they kept, winning the game.

The Bearcats hit the road again when they come up against William Jewell College’s Cardinals at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, in Liberty.
