Polk County Democrats will be hosting a private event, "Chat & Care Social" on Monday Nov. 18, at Basil & Bourbon from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The committee will be meeting to share and care along with special remarks from the Chair Gail Skalicky and a few others. It will be a time of fun, fellowship and support. Please make plans to attend and bring a friend(s). If you will be in attendance please go to the Polk County Democrats Facebook page and RSVP the event so that the committee has a head count in order to prepare food for the event. more

On Friday, Nov. 8, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the Humane Society of Missouri (HSMO), and the Animal Cruelty Task Force (ACT), executed a search warrant at a house on Highway 13 in Brighton. Twenty-seven dogs, including very young puppies, were rescued from the property located near the Polk and Greene County line. Reports claim numerous dogs were deceased. more
Toward the end of the 19th century, a feud between two scientists advanced the field of Paleontology. O.C. Marsh and E.D. Cope tried to sabotage each other for almost three decades. The feud began in 1868 when Marsh publicly humiliated Cope for incorrectly constructing a dinosaur skeleton. Their skirmish included publishing slanderous articles and selling tawdry information to journalists about each other, stealing and destroying fossils, and planting spies on the other’s job sites - among other things. Even in death, Cope left behind a challenge for Marsh: measuring their cranial circumferences to see whose brain was bigger - Marsh declined. Due to their desire to outdo each other, they discovered over 130 new dinosaur species, including Triceratops, Brontosaurus, and Stegosaurus. more

The SBU women’s volleyball team completed a two-game weekend conference sweep at home for the first time in three years. This included beating Nationally recognized Rockhurst for the first time since 1987. The historic weekend was capped off with junior Ella Rademaker reaching 1,000 career kills, the first Bearcat to do so since 2010. more

The National FFA Milk Quality and Products CDE is a competitive event that allows students to prove their knowledge about the recognition, selection, and management necessary for quality milk and dairy products. Participants must complete a written exam on milk production and marketing, evaluate milk samples for flavor and quality, identify cheeses and characteristics, and complete milk acceptability tests in the team activity. more
Citizens Memorial Hospital broke ground on the CMH Dialysis Center Thursday, Nov. 7. More than 150 community members were present to celebrate the milestone. The ceremony included several speakers from CMH and the community, along with the ceremonial turning of dirt. more
