Polk County 4-H is joining schools, preschools, nonprofits, and local food enthusiasts in celebrating Farm to School Month by competing in a nine-State Crunch Off competition! Missouri is competing against Colorado, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota to determine who will be crowned the Mountain Plains Crunch Champion through having the most crunches into local apples or produce per capita. Throughout the week of Oct.12-18 local 4-H members will be tasting different varieties of apples and experimenting with apple preservation methods. This Crunch event encourages healthy eating, supports local agriculture, and helps students and community members gain a deeper understanding of the food system. Help Missouri win the Crunch Crown by crunching local produce during the week of Oct.12-18. The Polk County MU Extension Council has partnered with Polk County 4-H to be a 'Good Neighbor' to the six school-based 4-H clubs in Polk County and their 340 members. The clubs will each be given a 'Bracelets and Bananas' basket that will have a 4-H pledge bracelet for each of their members, bananas and a special banana recipe for the clubs to make. more

Halfway elementary students and Youth at Good Samaritan Boys Ranch have enjoyed hands-on lessons about agriculture during enrichment programming this summer. The school and ranch partnered with Missouri Farmers Care’s Agriculture Education on the Move™ (Ag Moves) to provide students with ten foundational lessons on agriculture topics, teaching students that their food comes from farms and the products used in everyday life come from agriculture. These lessons also made a difference in the life of Ag Moves Educator, Josie Toombs, as she helped Halfway’s future consumers make connections to their food, fuel, fibers and farmers today, as well as Ag Moves Educator, Velynda Cameron, as she helped future consumers living at the ranch make these connections. more
