Phyllis Benedict and I have a lot of things in common. For starters, we both learned how to type on manual typewriters several years ago, and we both get a real kick out of collecting and repurposing things. And since one of my sons married one of her daughters, we happen to share a couple of terrific grandchildren in common.

Rita Lemmon, Assessor of Polk County, announces that the board of equalization will begin meeting at 10 a.m. Monday, July 17, at the office of the Polk County Commission to hear those who disagree with the values of real estate established by the assessor for tax year 2023. The board tentatively plans to conclude the hearings by 12 p.m. on Friday, July 21, 2023.

The first Point Show of the season will start at 6 p.m. Saturday, June 24. Classes for halter, pleasure, showmanship and speed events will be showing. There will be a short clinic starting at 4 p.m. prior to the show. Open to all equines. Spectators welcome, bleachers available or bring lawn chairs.

Family fun at Pit Bull raising funds for MCE FFA, Bolivar BHS Wrestling team hosting a golf tournament, Bolivar BHS cheerleaders holding a bake sale and The Spot had their annual block party — games, food, vendors, riding — all for good causes.
