The regular meeting of the Polk County Genealogical Society will be Thursday, April 4. The meeting will be held at the PCGS Research Facility on the southeast corner of the square. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. with a short business meeting. Speaker for the evening will be Diane Warren who will be sharing her great-great-grandfather’s diary that he kept while serving in the Civil War. Polk County Republicans are hosting their annual Lincoln Day Dinner on Thursday, April 4, beginning at 6 p.m. The dinner will be held at the McClelland Dining Facility on the campus of SBU. Local and state candidates who have filed for offices to be selected in the Primary Election on August 6, 2024, are expected to be there. This gives voters an opportunity to meet the candidates and become an informed voter. more

April already! With the recent literally freezing temperatures, I’ve done fairly well at keeping my spring fever at bay. Yes, I have planted a few seeds just for the pure joy of watching them sprout, but I haven’t gone crazy. Yet. The temptation is always there, though. Intellectual, I understand that it is still too early for most things, but I am ready to get this gardening party started. more
If we were bison, we’d probably have a much higher opinion of brown-headed cowbirds. You’d be hard-pressed to find a birding enthusiast – or anyone else, for that matter – that holds much love for the brown-headed cowbird. This bird, which is common throughout Missouri and many other parts of the U.S., has earned the ire of many people because it parasitizes nests of other birds. Mid-April is usually when female cowbirds begin plopping their eggs into nests of various species. Although there’s little appreciation for these nest-infiltration tactics, even the most ardent cowbird-hater would have to admit it’s a rather remarkable method of producing the next generation. more
On Saturday, March 30, at 9:47 a.m., Trooper Gunby responded to a two-vehicle crash at Mo. 13 and Route B, four miles north of Bolivar. The accident happened when a 2021 Chevrolet Equinox, driven by Kalie Libscomb, 44, of Dunnegan, was crossing northbound Highway 13 from Highway B. She was struck by a 2014 Ford Focus traveling north on the highway. The vehicle contained driver Patsy Ash, 74, and William Ash, 52, both of Collins. All involved in the accident were wearing seatbelts and sustained moderate injuries. They were taken to CMH Bolivar via ambulance. C&H Towing of Collins removed the Focus and B&B Wrecker removed the Equinox. more
The Citizens Memorial Hospital Auxiliary recently donated $19,800 to Citizens Memorial Home Medical Equipment. HME purchased a cargo minivan to deliver and service power mobility equipment. more
