In between the blockbusters of the Thanksgiving season and the blockbusters of the Christmas season comes “Kraven the Hunter,” a movie that was never going to be a blockbuster in any season. Sergei “Kraven” Kravinoff (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) is another one of those Spider-Man villains that’s getting his own movie because Sony still has a piece of the “Spider-Man” franchise and they think fans will mistake it for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is owned by Disney. “Venom,” “Morbius,” and “Madame Web” are all part of the same branch. Supposedly there are (or at least “were”) plans for a big Avengers-style crossover down the line, but these movies keep bombing so badly that fans don’t care if they continue. more

The Pleasant Hope Fire Protection District recently installed a dry fire hydrant in the northern part of their district. No reliable water source was available for fire department use in this area requiring the department to haul water long distances during emergency incidents. Jim and Nancy McDaniel recently constructed a large lake on their property located on EE Highway in the Schofield area and allowed the district to install the hydrant at this location. Jim and son Bryan McDaniel, who owns a local excavation company, donated the equipment and time to assist department members with the installation. The district would like to say thank you to the McDaniel family for providing this much needed resource to the members of the community. more

It was Christmas morning. The kids were still in bed. They had all been to their church Christmas Eve service the night before. Mom and Dan were drinking their coffee and admiring the decorated real Christmas tree they and the kids had picked out and cut down at a local tree farm. There were a few lights on it, ornaments, things the kids had made, and family pictures. They both agreed they liked it much better than their old artificial tree. more

The beloved tale, written by Charles Dickens in 1843, was more than a mere Christmas story; it changed how people celebrated the holiday. Because of the story, traditions like charitable contributions and making the holiday an event to celebrate with friends and family; before this, it wasn’t really a ‘big deal’ as we see it now. The appearance of ghosts, however, was a longstanding tradition in England, and they often told scary stories during the holiday. Dickens created the classic for multiple reasons. Firstly, he was broke and needed the funds. Secondly, it was a reform piece, designed to show the plight of the poor - something close to the author’s heart (he spent some of his childhood in a workhouse). To get the book printed by Christmas, a simple six-page manuscript was submitted to the publishers for approval as the book was not fully envisioned. It was printed and ready to sell by Dec. 19, and sold out by Christmas Eve; within a year, the book had been reprinted 13 times. Though A Christmas Carol is his most popular, Dickens wrote four other holiday stories, The Chimes, The Cricket on the Hearth, The Battle of Life, and The Haunted Man. more
