The Bolivar Disabled American Veterans Chapter 66 and Auxiliary hosted the annual Veterans Day celebration, Monday, Nov. 11. It was a beautiful day to gather on the Bolivar square and salute our veterans. Area schools and other organizations held ceremonies on Friday, Nov. 8 and Monday, Nov. 11. more

On Nov. 9, coaches and several team members from Lockwood’s 2004 State Championship volleyball team were honored before the Class One title match at the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau. The ceremony was part of the Missouri State High School Activity Association’s Courtside Traditions Program to recognize the final-four teams that faced off twenty years ago. Among those being honored was Tasha Hamlet, Assistant Coach for Bolivar High School’s Varsity Volleyball team, who played for Lockwood during the championship game two decades ago. more

On Dec. 6, Halfway High School will host an American Red Cross blood and power red drive. Power red collects the red cells but returns most of the plasma and blood platelets to the donor. To be a power red donor, you must have types A-, B-, or O blood and meet certain criteria. The Polk County unit of Missouri Retired Teachers Association and Public School Personnel will meet Thursday, Nov. 21, at Open Hearts United Methodist Church in Bolivar. Please note that this is a change in meeting locations. The meeting will begin at 1:30 and any retired public school employee, both certified and non-certified are encouraged to attend to hear the latest information from the state office. Also on the agenda is the election of new officers and committee appointments and a possible change in the local unit by-laws with changing the name of the group to Polk County Retired School Employees. more

Polk County Democrats will be hosting a private event, "Chat & Care Social" on Monday Nov. 18, at Basil & Bourbon from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The committee will be meeting to share and care along with special remarks from the Chair Gail Skalicky and a few others. It will be a time of fun, fellowship and support. Please make plans to attend and bring a friend(s). Each year during the holiday season, several businesses around Bolivar and in Polk County set up an angel tree for Share Your Christmas. On each angel is a request from a child. These requests are taken during signups for the Share Your Christmas program sponsored by Polk County Christian Social Ministries. It has become a family tradition for families to choose an angel, or angels. Then they shop for the gift listed on the angel. Gifts are to be returned to the service desk in the store where the angel was chosen. The gifts will be collected and distributed to the age group chairmen who will then construct a gift bag for each child. more

On Saturday, Nov. 2, KLife hosted a gala event called “Sweet Impact”, complete with a jazz band, dinner, auctions, and a raffle. The event raised more than $80 thousand, $10 thousand more than their goal. The money raised goes toward the outreach and ministry of approximately 300 Polk County youth. All this fanfare was for a momentous occasion: celebrating two decades of the organization's outreach in Polk County. more
