“Hungry as a bear” is a phrase humans sometimes use to describe their pre-meal salivations. Meal preparers can be thankful this is just a saying because, at this time of year, if people truly were as hungry as a bear, no amount of cooking could satisfy them.

Bolivar’s Lady Liberator tennis hosted their District Championship on Saturday, bringing in teams from Clinton, Lamar, and Nevada. Tensions and emotions were high throughout the sunny and hot day. “Not only is it physically demanding on a hot day like today, tennis is 90% mental,” head coach Nathan Rothdiener said about his team’s preparation going into today’s contest, “You are out on an island, nowhere to hide when things go bad, and you have to battle your opponent, the conditions, crowd, and your own emotions. As a coach, we do our best to reiterate to the girls that success is not defined by wins and losses, it’s defined by how you approach the game.”

Lady Liberators softball hosted three games in the second half of this week. As the team looked to turn their season around for a late postseason push, they fell short of their opponents. On Thursday, Sept. 28, Bolivar hosted the Kickapoo Chiefs. This has become a match-up known for being physical and filled with great play. However, by the end of the 4th inning, Bolivar was down 4-3. The Lady Liberators could not consistently get hits throughout the contest. Kickapoo put up nine runs in the next two innings as their offense outplayed Bolivar’s defense. After the poor defensive performance, the bats fell silent for the Liberators, failing to record a run and only having 3 hits in the final 4 innings. It was an unexpected outcome for a Bolivar team that has seen major improvements throughout the year.

Bolivar tennis had a very long and hard season this year. The Liberators were able to squeeze out wins from matches that had seemed lost. Monday’s match against Republic was one that the team was unable to get over the hump losing 4-5. Getting wins for the Liberators was Kami Bryan and Emma Goodman as the #2 doubles team, and Bryan also won her singles match 8-2. Also getting wins in singles was Jillian Horner at the #4 spot with a hard fought tiebreaker winning 9-7, and Goodman wins at the #5 spot 8-5. Republic has a very hard and talented team from top to bottom.

Bolivar tennis celebrated their seniors on the squad at the Monday, Sept. 18, match and was able to pull out a win over a very talented Rogersville team. Bolivar won in decisive fashion 7-2 and was able to set the tone early in their doubles matches. The team has vastly improved throughout the season and seem to be playing at the highest level yet. The early season saw some struggles for the Liberators but they look to have turned the page as they power through the second half of their season.

I miss the writers. The Writers Guild of America went on strike in early May, and it has been a creative wasteland on television ever since. Most of the shows Tom and I used to watch won't be back with new episodes this fall. Lately, we've been flipping through over 100 channels, amazed that there are so many options yet so little we want to see.
