The presidential pardon of a turkey each Thanksgiving became an annual tradition when George H.W. Bush offered a certain bird a reprieve, “Let me assure you, and this fine tom turkey, that he will not end up on anyone’s dinner table, not this guy - he’s presented a presidential pardon as of right now.” Though it has been a yearly practice since 1989, there were lucky birds before this administration. John Kennedy, Ronald Regan, and First Ladies Nixon and Carter had also extended the life of a fortunate fowl. According to the George Bush White House Archives, the first instance of a turkey pardon came from Lincoln when his son Tad asked him to spare the life of a pet tom named Jack. The archives also state that the National Turkey Federation raises a turkey specifically for this event and that particular animal is given special care and attention throughout its life. Once pardoned, turkeys retire to the Frying Pan Park’s Kidwell Farm in Virginia, to live out the remainder of their lives in a petting zoo.

As the holidays approach, it is common to look back at memories from our past - the people who are gone, the moments we shared, and the times that can’t be recaptured. Recently, my thoughts drifted to autumn days in Calhan, Colorado where my grandparents owned a seven-acre homestead with a small collection of animals. One critter in particular was a grey goose with a major attitude. His name was Gus, and for much of my childhood, he terrified me.

For years, I said the thing all busy parents say when we’re wading through the drama of raising humans – the feeding and cleaning, the last-minute science projects, and the after-school activities that swallow up evenings and whole weekends. On days when I felt outnumbered by kids, errands and messes, I’d mentally reassure myself with this one hopeful phrase: “When the kids are in college, I’ll have time to take care of myself.”

Hi, I'm Luna Bear! I'm a 8 year old Great Pyrenese mix. I'm an older lady and have been in the shelter system for almost 3 years...I'm a lady of leisure and independence. I appreciate my own space, and while I may not be the life of the dog park, I offer a mellow companionship that's hard to find. I prefer a quiet home where I can relax and be myself. I'm not one for other dogs or cats, but I promise to fill your life with a unique kind of love.

Henry VIII created the role of GS in the 16th century. Stool was the name of the vessel used by the king to um, do his business - we call it a toilet. The GS’s job was to provide water for the stool, towels for cleaning, fresh water for washing, monitoring the ‘product’, and reporting peculiarities to doctors. Some say the GS may have also wiped ye royal bottom, but that is debated. It was a highly sought-after job due to its proximity to the king. George III had nine GSs - one became the Prime Minister of Britain.
