The National FFA Milk Quality and Products CDE is a competitive event that allows students to prove their knowledge about the recognition, selection, and management necessary for quality milk and dairy products. Participants must complete a written exam on milk production and marketing, evaluate milk samples for flavor and quality, identify cheeses and characteristics, and complete milk acceptability tests in the team activity. more

Ellie Samek of the Bolivar FFA chapter in Bolivar, was named a national finalist this year in the Social Science category in the Division 3 of the competition. Ellie was a top 10 finalist with the results being announced on stage at the National FFA Convention. Ellie earned 3rd place in the Nation in her agriscience fair, earning a gold rating and $500. more

An oversight in the 2024 Bolivar High School hall-of-fame article from Sept. 18, 2024, brought James (Jim) Duncan’s service to the forefront. The induction piece claimed, “Derald’s name is inscribed on the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C….He is the only Polk County resident and Bolivar High School graduate listed as killed in action during the Vietnam War.” “Derald” is Derald Hood, a 21-year-old killed in South Vietnam on Dec. 19, 1970. more

The Bolivar R-1 School District has announced an increase in the daily pay rate for substitute teachers to $120, effective Nov. 1, from the previous rate of $100. This adjustment is part of a district-wide effort to address challenges in securing enough substitute teachers, a need that has grown recently. By raising the pay, the district hopes to better support current substitutes and attract new ones. more
