The Marvel Cinematic Universe at large got to take a break in 2024. Sure, “Deadpool & Wolverine” was one of the biggest hits of the year, but that was more about Disney showing off its newly-acquired 20th Century Fox toys than advancing the lore of its bread-and-butter franchise. But “Captain America: Brave New World” brings back the classics, invoking two characters that brought fans into the MCU in the first place: Captain America and The Incredible Hulk. Sure, it’s the Sam “Falcon” Wilson (Anthony Mackie) version of Captain America, and the Hulk connection doesn’t actually involve Bruce Banner, but a good movie can make audiences care about the evolution of these characters even without the more familiar faces. Unfortunately, this particular movie seems to be reminding people less of the glory days of the MCU and more of why it needed to take a break. more

The absentee ballots for the April General Municipal Election will be ready for voting on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2025. The Polk County Clerk’s office will be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday, and open through the lunch hour for absentee voting. Those casting a ballot by mail must make sure their written and signed request states the reason for voting absentee and an address to which the ballot should be mailed. Those requesting ballots by mail must make sure their written request for a ballot arrives at the County Clerk’s office by 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, 2025. The deadline for casting an absentee ballot in person at the County Clerk’s office is 5 p.m. the day before the election, Monday, April 7, 2025. The County Clerk’s office will also be open for absentee voting on Saturday, April 5, 2025, from 8 a.m. to noon. more

Bart Millard’s parents were divorced when he was three-years-old. His mother didn’t want him so Millard was sent to live with his father who was abusive to him through much of his childhood. As a child he lived in fear of his father. When he would get upset about something he would take it out on Bart. more
The second annual Bearcat Olympics took place Sunday, Feb. 2 in the Meyer Wellness Center where SBU’s athletes went head-to-head in lighthearted, competitive events. more

While most of Polk County didn't receive the amount of snow that was predicted, there was more than enough to bring life to a halt for a couple of days. Various amounts were reported anywhere from 2" to 6," but cold temperatures were as much a problem as the snowfall. Businesses closed, schools out, emergency crews working around the clock, the storm was the worst Polk County had seen in a few years. more

The annual BIS Valentine's Dance, Thursday, Feb. 13, was anticipated and planned for weeks by the girls at Bolivar Intermediate School. Getting dressed up, dancing, enjoying refreshments, getting pictures, and socializing was the highlight of the night. more

MERGE is back! MERGE is Polk County KLIFE and FBC's spring retreat for high school and middle school students on March 28-30th. It's a weekend to take a step away from their normal daily distractions and stress and have a fun-filled, intentional weekend pursuing Jesus. We want to create space for our students to ask questions, dive deeper, and know that they aren’t alone in their walk with the Lord. This year we are focusing on the parable of the Prodigal Son! more

Matilda Polk Campbell chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution received a celebration grant to use in their community to foster awareness and to celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary. Grant money and other donated funds were used to purchase books that were given to school librarians in seventeen area schools. Over the course of the last few weeks, chapter members have been delivering books to the schools. more
